Holidays and Transportation

After Viewing parts 7 & 8 of the human footprint, what surprised you the most? Can you think of ways you can reduce your carbon emissions?

  1. Wilner Mettelus, I didn't know car part are made around the world to me that stupid we should just make them in one place we can save a lot of oil, gas and carbon cause we dont have to fly the part around. Also we need to start using those fake Christmas tree cause each year we cut down about 20,000,000 that mean more carbon is releasing in the air. We gotta to start thinking on a safe and easy way to fly cause just a sample air trip can cause tons of carbon that can take a car months to make we in America need to serious need to start walking and car pooling riding bikes.

  2. Wilner, yes, the car part issue is a very unique one. It could provide a lot of work for U.S. citizens if parts were manufactured here and definitely reduce the carbon footprint. Unfortunately, due to high union expenses, it is not economically feasible to manufacture parts here, so things would need to change in order for that to happen.

  3. I was shocked at how all the parts we use to make a car are shipped in from all around the world. Seriously, if America ends up making the world mad and everyone decides to cut us off from their supplies, we're screwed! It's time that we start using our resources and make everything here. I know it may take time to get there but we should at least consider it and start taking steps.

Another topic that upset me is that 125 million cell phones a year are thrown out. Are you kidding me!?! Then to find out what has happened in Africa makes it even worse. All those illegal mine operations and the destruction of animal habitat's all for the justification of supplying the main mineral that goes into a cell phone is just heart breaking. I say we need to hold on to our cell phones longer instead of upgrading every year OR we could just simply start recycling them.

    1. Ali, the cell phone issue is crazy, especially when many manufacturers have recycling programs. We basically, just don't want to take the time to send them in.

  4. What caught my attention in video #8 was how much energy the United States consumes. We consume more than a quarter of the worlds energy. I am really taken back by this. What about all the other countries in the world who have little or no energy at all? Is it really necessary for Americans to use up all this energy that should be reciprocated with everyone else? I think that Americans are extremely greedy and will always want more.

One of the ways that we humans can reduce our carbon emissions is by not driving as much as we do. There are companies who make cars just for show and nobody thinks about what was used to make that vehicle. Raw materials that we could keep hidden within the planet to create more over time is being used to make an item that nobody will drive. It is a waste of time and a waste of energy in my opinion. Also, there are people who spoil their children rotten with cars. I know some kids whose parents have bought them an 2010 motor vehicle and in one year received a 2011 for their birthday. I thought we were all in a recession. I also thought that we as Americans are trying to make a difference to better our world for the generations to come. But, what I am seeing now it does not seem like that is happening. Humans are way too materialistic and do not realize that we are taking for granted the greatest most perfect gift that God has given us. The Earth, that sustains our life. If it is sunny outside I see no problem walking to the store. People are too lazy. They say that life goes by quick but it only goes by fast if you are wasting it. And we are wasting it on things we do not need but want. - Sanchez Charles

    1. Sanchez, the energy usage by our country is pretty intense, but the scary thing to consider is that countries like China and India are expected to surpass our usage in the next few years, which will present some serious global issues.

    2. I can't believe I am saying this but in the direction that we are steering, our planet it is heading for oblivion. And by the time human see the fruit of their crops it would have already been too late. And WE will live to see it. Some big changes that are not in our favor is coming our way at a fast pace.

  5. From watching the previous footprint videos, I was constantly in shock about all the items we use each year as individuals. However, I never really thought about it that in depth that I would relate it to the topic of pollution in terms of carbon emissions. It is truly flabbergasting how much American manufacturers depend so extensively on imports from different parts of the world. The amount of imports from foreign parts of the world that had to be done to build just a single car was astonishing when thinking about the amount of carbon that is being released into the air to ship just a single item such as a seat-belt which comes all the way from Sweden!
America's carbon input alone is significantly alarming! By travel alone, between all the flights and the driving, puts us on the top of Carbon emissions on a Global scale. But there is something we can do about it because there are other countries out there with larger populations than America that don't even emit half of this carbon pollution.
A practice of using local resources and manufacturing/growing our own items can be initiated to cut down the amount of travelling, therefore lessening carbon emissions. Americans also need to become more open to using public transport when they can so that we can cut down on the amount of vehicles on the roads. And although we never really thought about buying cards on valentines day as a significant contribution, it is, and we need to start recycling to cut down on the demand. Recycling on a whole needs to be a nationwide practice so that we can save our resources and use them to manufacture new products instead of having to be so reliant on imports.

  6. I cant believe we use so many trees when we have the world wide web to interact and do work. We need to be more careful about what fossil fuels we use and how much of it we use. We need to realize that we are only hurting yourself and our the generations that are soon to come. We are destroying our world which god has blessed us with. What kind of people are we to destroy our home.

  7. Steven Galagarza-Every time I see these videos I feel more guilty knowing that I have wasted so much paper in my life newspaper and just blank paper that means I have killed a lot of trees which give me clean oxygen to breathe. It is amazing because almost everybody has a cell phone and t know that had 4 cell phones and I have just thrown them away I feel bad but now I know we can give them back and they can recycle it in a better way. People should know about these situations I certainly did not know about them but know I have knowledge on what to do with some of the things I have. This country need to make some improvements I believe we can start with trains like in New York they can get almost everywhere by train it would help a lot with our pollution using energy from the sun and air.

The foot print video allows me to know exectly how much that I a person can pollute. Seems to me that its hard not to. For example with the waste we should on paper, how many trees have to be cut down so we can write something down or eaven seen a post card. Then would it help it you was to seen a text or email. Well it this case you will think that will help. Well knowing now that text and email put more carbon into the air. How can I do my part on help put back in more then I take out. Then listening to the actually pollution we put in on driving a car. Well riding a bike will allow us to stop putting so much carbon in, but you have to think about you cant ride a bike every where you need to go. american isn't build that why so if we wanted to we couldnt stop putting so much cardon in.One thing that bothers me is that can really stop how much we pullute? We each drive 11,000 miles per year. Then they are coming with hybertic cars will be more helpful. But who can afford a car like that. With the encomcy the way it is times are hard for many of use. Trust that these issues raise a open mind to me. But if we all was aware on this can we actually put a total stop to how much carbon we put in the air? These video is a true eye opener to me.

  9. When to watch the videos I surprised the necessary quantity of trees to create the news paper every single days. It make me feel bad because in my country my family recive every single days a news paper are really we do not read all the notices and then to have many paper we throw away those and now, I think we can get less news paper to reduce the spend of trees.
Another thing that surprised me was the percent of cars that United States have that is 30% related with the world, it is a big percent and I know it affect all the world because all the toxic gases are going to the atmosphere. Things like those are impossible to change but I can help since my house with somethings, for example I can go less time to the supermarket, buy the news paper when is necessary and try to spend less resources because we are consuming more than the earth produce and it is so bad for the humans.

  10. The thing that surprises me about these videos is the human consumption of products from around the world which we use in our own country for things like the latest cell phones, which we really don't need. Also, our transportation like personal vehicles, which in most countries people use more public transportation, which I think in the long run would save on resources.

  11. What surprised me the most was the fact that they use 500,000 trees within a weeks time so that we can read the newspaper. 191,000 trees a year that means. Another interesting thing was how many turkeys we use 265,000 thats crazy. ways i can reduce my carbon emissions by reduce reuse and recycyle

  12. What i was interested in the most was the amount of trees they use a week and the amount a year they use for us to have newspaper to read. The amount was 500,000 a week, 191,000 a year. The other thing that caught my eye was that we buy 1,000,000 magazines everyday. And there are a lot of carbon that's being produce into the atmosphere.

  13. What really surprised me is the amount of trees that must be cut down to make the newspapers, which keep us informed today. those are very high numbers, 500.000 trees are needed just to make our Sunday’s newspapers and to make newspapers for one year, 191 million trees enough to cover the entire state of south Carolina, what means that we could be cutting down all the trees of a state every year, so what may happen in a few years?
with those numbers, we are releasing 365.500 tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere rather than be absorbed by trees to create oxygen. it is quite worrying.

The following are 15 tips to reduce our carbon emissions:

    1.Pay attention to packaging.
    2.Ditch bottled water.
    3.Energy-proof your home.
    4.Go native.
    5.Window shop.
    6.Take a direct flight.
7.Switch water heaters to vacation mode.
    8.Unplug it
    9.Keep your car.
    10.Chuck your microwave.
    11.Use cold water.
    12.Have the family over.
    13.Make time for errands.
14.The Three Rs: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle.
    15. Buy organic and local
